Barton Creek Greenbelt
Austin’s Barton Creek Greenbelt is the type of place that all nature lovers wish they had close by. We lived in Austin for several years but had no idea the place existed - had we lived there now, a simple internet search would have led us straight to it.
The 7.9 mile greenbelt trail begins at Zilker Park and continues south, on the east side of Mopac. The trail passes under 360, where we normally access the trail, and later turns north, passing to the west of 360 where it ends at the Barton Creek Wilderness Area.
The trail has been left in a very natural state, meaning that exposed roots and rocks can be expected along some areas of the trail. The trail is open to both hikers and mountain bikers but as far as we've seen, this mingling doesn’t cause a problem. Running alongside the trail is Barton Creek, which provides some amazing scenery along the way. For a photographer, this is the main attraction!
I am including a link to a very informative article about the Barton Creek Greenbelt. If you plan on going, make sure to click the link about the Violet Crown Trail extension.
